Stay Engaged: Your Social Media Guide at #NABJ13

We know that it is impossible to make it to every panel discussion and every event. But it is possible to stay informed and engaged with #NABJ13 on the go.
Our social media plan this year is simple: Engage. Inform. Execute. Message. 
We want to actively engage with you at the convention and those who are not able to go.
We will inform you. What you need to know, where you need to go and what people are talking about.
The NABJ convention is more than a celebration. It is the opportunity for journalists to come together, have an open forum to discuss issues in our newsrooms and in our communities. We will execute this plan to keep those conversations on a national platform.
Last but not least, we want to visually tell the story of NABJ through multiple platforms— through our message.

10 Packing Tips For #NABJ13

I am a world traveler who has been on the road since taking my first flight — New York to London — when I was six.  And as an aviation journalist, I have taken more than my fair share of trips and have become an expert in packing, especially now that airlines (except for Southwest and JetBlue) charge for checked bags.  As you prepare to pack for your upcoming trip to Orlando for the NABJ Convention, please allow me to offer you some of my best packing tips.

  1. Choose a primary color, like black, navy or brown, and accessorize accordingly. Bring basics like pants, skirt and blazer, and use accessories and different shirts/blouses to mix and match;
  2. Roll with it! Roll your clothes to make sure things fit accordingly. If you don’t want to roll, then buy Space Bags to compress your outfits;
  3. Pack older underwear. You can wear them and throw them away;
  4. Limit yourself to 3 pairs of shoes, including the ones you travel with;
  5. Weigh your luggage BEFORE you leave. Airlines limit that first bag to 50 lbs; after that, hefty fees kick in. They also kick in after the first checked bag.  To see just how much, click here;
  6. Pack important/valuable items in your carry-on. Also include a portable toothbrush, underwear and a small deodorant just in case you luggage is lost;
  7. Keep your luggage claim tags in your purse or pocket. It is 1000% easier for the airline to find your luggage if you have your bag tag number.
  8. Take a picture of your luggage. If it’s lost, you can show it and email it to the airline. If your bag is black, put a colorful tag, tie or even duct tape to make it more easily identifiable.
  9. Keep a list of what you packed in case your luggage is lost and you have to file a claim with the airline; and
  10. Don’t overpack. You know you’ll pick up materials at the convention, and you’ll want to have room for them — plus you do NOT want to pay those extra baggage fees!

JULY

  • The National Association of Black Journalists welcomes you to join us from July 31-August 4, 2013 as we gather in Orlando for the 38th Annual Convention and Career Fair! Thousands of journalists, media executives, public relations professionals, and students are expected to attend to network, participate in professional development sessions and celebrate excellence in journalism.
  • NAJA and Native Public Media will co-host this year’s national conference, giving special focus to the latest innovations in the media industry and news developments in Indian Country. The national conference for media professionals interested in improving their reporting on and delivery of Native news will be held at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel and Conference Center July 18-21.   • George Mason University is the host of the Washington Journalism and Media Conference (WJMC) and each summer welcomes high school student leaders from all over the country as National Youth Correspondents. This summer’s conference will take place July 7-12, 2013.

AUGUST

  • The Society of Professional Journalists, Radio Television News Association and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists  present the Excellence in Journalism conference this year in Anaheim on August 24-26. Click here for more information.
  • The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) is a nonprofit, educational association of journalism and mass communication educators, students and media professionals. The conference is in Washington D.C. on August 8-11.
  • More than 850 journalists, news executives, media researchers, and community leaders will attend the 23rd Annual AAJA Convention at the Hilton New York, August 21-24, 2013. Click here for more information.
  • More than 350 journalists and communication professionals from across the United States will meet in Boston from August 22 – 25, 2013 for the NLGJA National Convention and 9th LGBT Media Summit. Click here for more information.
  • The McCormick Tribune Specialized Reporting Institute will be held at the UTEP campus this fall from September 26-29. There are 15 all-expenses paid scholarships for professional and independent journalists to attend. The application deadline is August 5. You may find more information here.

NABJ TwitterChat For First-Time Convention Attendees

You’ve bought your registration, booked a flight and hotel and are well on your way to your very first 2013 NABJ Conference in Orlando. But that’s just the beginning.  The last thing you want to do is show up at the conference without knowing the lay of the land.

So on Tuesday, June 25 from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST, NABJ Digital Journalist Task Force Secretary Kiratiana Freelon (@Kiratiana) be your guide to navigating the convention via a  TweetChat.

Under the hashtag #nabj13prep, the @NABJDigital twitter handle will work with our panel of convention veterans to answer all your questions. They will also chat about their experiences at past conventions — all in  140 characters.

The panelists are: Brittany Geneva Cummings (@BrittanyGeneva), an associate producer for CNN; Michael Feeney (@mfeeney), a reporter for the New York Daily News; and Kirstin Garriss (@ReporterGarriss), a reporter at WHAG-TV.

10 #NABJ13 Digital Workshops That Will Help You In Your Newsroom

I was every excited to see the workshops chosen for the NABJ Annual Convention and Career Fair in Orlando this year.  Of course, I have a natural bias toward seeing more digital programming, since this really is where all of the journalism jobs are going.

  • The National Association of Black Journalists will be hosting the 2013 NABJ Region 3 Conference on March 8-10 at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. The conference program will offer participants an opportunity to sharpen old skills, learn new ones, and engage in valuable networking.
  • The Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism is holding a free online webinar, “Branding for Journalists: You Being You,” March 5, 2013, at noon or 4:00 p.m., EST. In this webinar, Robin J. Phillips, the Reynolds Center’s digital director, will show you some simple tips to take control of your image, and accentuate the value of who you are and what you do best – apart from your news organization.
  • The Knight Digital Media Center at UC-Berkeley is offering an intensive 9-week graduate level certificate program, “Content & Strategy,” which focuses on the strategic implementation and production of digital media content combining seminar style instruction with practical hands-on training. The program is from March 5 through May 2. There will be presentations by world-class trainers, award-winning journalists and industry leaders, including Richard Koci Hernandez, Len De Groot, Jerry Monti. Tuition costs are $5,900.   • The Knight Digital Media Center at UC-Berkeley is hosting a two-day, hands-on certification program, “Create Meaning from Data,” focused on communicating complex information with visually appealing charts, graphs and maps. It will be held March 8-9 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at UC-Berkeley’s North Gate Hall. Tuition costs $645. Participants will learn to create a clearer, more meaningful picture of complex statistics and publicly available data, tell stories with interactive GIS maps, and create beautiful and effective graphs and charts.   • The Investigative Reporters and Editors are hosting the “2013 Salt Lake City Watchdog Workshop” in Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday, March 15 through Saturday, March 16. This training will offer several of our core sessions that will improve your ability to find information on the Web quickly, and point you to key documents and data that will help you add depth to your daily work and produce quick-hit enterprise stories. In addition, this workshop will give you tips on bulletproofing stories, digging deeper on the Web with social media, search engines and much more. In this free, hour-long online training, Google senior research scientist Daniel M. Russell will offer his tips, techniques and strategies for using Google to find what might seem to be impossible.
  • The Future Journalism Project, media initiative which explores disruption, opportunity and innovation across the media landscape, is looking for spring 2013 interns.
  • Harvard Writers is hosting a 3-day course, “Achieving Healthcare Leadership and Outcomes through Writing and Publishing,” for physicians, healthcare professionals and writers who want to publish nonfiction in print form. The course will be held at the Boston Marriott Cambridge in Cambridge, M.A..

APRIL

  • The Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism will award two $1,000 fellowships to attend the annual conference of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) in Washington April 4-6. NABJ member Christopher Nelson, a freelance journalist based in Baltimore, was one of last year’s winners.
  • Beginning in 2013, UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism will each year offer five $10,000 postgraduate Food and Farming Journalism Fellowships. The fellowship, a project of the Knight Center in Science and Environmental Journalism, is supported by a grant from The 11th Hour Project, a program of The Schmidt Family Foundation. Online applications are due April 1. The program will announce this year’s fellows by May 1.
  • The Data Visualization Summit will be taking place on April 10-13 in San Francisco. The summit brings together leaders in Data Viz to explain and clarifiy the numerous benefits of using data visualization. If you would like to attend please contact Victoria Elton at velton@theiegroup.com.

  • The Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism is holding a free two-part online webinar, “Getting the Goods – Interviews that Work,” on May 8-9 at noon or 4:00 p.m. EST. Pulitzer Prize winner Jacqui Banaszynski will explore the core purposes, techniques and ethics of the interview process. She will reveal different interview approaches that work best in different situations and that apply to any genre of journalism. On Day 2, she will focus on interviews that produce not just information, but true stories, rich with character, scene and detail.

JUNE

  • The Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism is holding a free two-part online webinar, “The Business of Me,” June 4-6 at noon or 4:00 p.m. In this three-day webinar with Mark Luckie of Twitter, learn how to brand and market yourself and to pitch your ideas, plus understand the basics of financial and time management. Identify five next steps to advance your career as an entrepreneur.
  • The Knight Digital Media Center is taking applications for its two-week “Multimedia Storytelling Institute 2013,” June 10-21 at UC-Berkeley. This intensive two-week program provides seminar style and hands-on training in essential skills for digital media production. The institute is ideal for journalists, educators and communication professionals interested in a rapid-paced immersible experience in multimedia content creation through delivery. The cost is $5,400; there’s a 10% discount if you register before May 10.
  • The Online News Association is partnering with the Global Editors Network to present several sessions at the Global News Summit 2013: Hack the Newsroom! (#GEN2013) conference on June 19-21 in Paris, France at Hotel de Ville, 5 rue de Lobau, 75004 Paris. The conference will feature industry experts giving you the tools and strategies you need to help seed, encourage and implement experimentation and start-up culture in your digital newsroom. FREE DJTF Webinar: Crafting The Best Workshop Proposal For #NABJ13

The call is out for workshop proposals for the 2013 National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention and Career Fair in Orlando, Fla.  There are always questions on what workshops should be included and how a winning proposal should look like.

Join NABJ 2013 Convention Program Committee Chair Benet Wilson — along with committee members Sarah Glover (NBC10 Philadelphia social media editor and PABJ president), Denise Clay (writer/editor, Philadelphia Sunday Sun and adjunct professor at Temple University) and Glenn Proctor (40-year journalism veteran and founder of career services consultancy ReddJob)  — for a discussion on how to craft the perfect workshop proposal.
