Yesterday, I had the honor of doing a presentation on free tools with my fellow Online News Association board member Robert Hernandez at the Asian American Journalists Association convention. For two hours, Robert and I offered up our favorite tools and talked about how we used them in our journalism lives.
And it was a conversation, with attendees asking some great questions and sharing some of their own favorite tools. You can see our presentation, including links, here. You can also follow some of the conversation using the #AAJAGeeks hashtag.
On another note, it was great to see so many folks from NABJ at the AAJA convention. I have to give a big shout out to NYABJ President Michael Feeney for coordinating his members to volunteer, allowing them to attend this great convention — complete with career fair — for free. I also managed to catch up with new NABJ President Bob Butler, Dori Maynard of the Maynard Institute, Richard Prince, Twitter’s Mark Luckie, journalism entrepreneur Kelly Virella and DJTF founder Andrew Humphrey.
And finally, I was thrilled to be able to spend time with my New York City-based stars (they are too accomplished to call mentees anymore): Natalie McNeal, new DJTF co-chair Kiratiana Freelon, AAJA program committee member Emma Carew, Meena Thiruvengadam and Christopher Nelson. I’m really proud of them all, and they remind me of what can be accomplished in journalism and new media.
