On Blogging

By Benét J. Wilson, DJTF co-chair,

For the past few weeks, I’ve been chatting online with young people trying to break into the field of journalism during these tough times.  One of the things I’ve suggested that they do is start a blog to showcase their writing skills.  A big question I get is — how do you find the time to blog when you have your regular day job?

It’s a good question, but I answer — if you’re really looking for a writing job, why not do something that will help you stand out?  I am a busy woman.  I am the mother of a 4-year-old.  I’m active in several organizations and my church.  I’m a quilter.  I have my full-time job, where I write daily for one company blog and contribute a few days a week to another.  I write my own new media blog a few days a week and I’m now trying to get this blog off the ground.

What this has done is given me a very nice portfolio of work I can point to in case the worst happens and I lose my current job.  The Blogging Tips site has a great post — Mixing Your Day Job with Your Blogging Addiction.  Tip number one — get up early to write.  I have this one in the bag.  After having my daughter, I have completely lost the ability to sleep late.  I’m usually up between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m., which gives me time to blog and get in a bit of quilting.

Tip number two — take advantage of free training classes at your company for inspiration.  Not everyone works for a company as large as mine, but many companies offer seminars, webinars and online training classes that can help take you to the next level.

Tip three — Block out your lunch hour and book a conference room.  Most people  get a lunch hour, and you can take your laptop there or even go off site — I like the Cosi Cafe across the street from my office with free WiFi — and blog to your heart’s content.

I also get emails from people who say they don’t know what to blog about.  So I thank social media guru Chris Brogan for this post on 20 Blog Topics to Get You Unstuck.   I also found this post — 50 Blogging Lessons To Know If You’re Starting Today — from the Future Buzz blog to be very helpful.   And for inspiration on what template you should use, check out 50 Beautiful and Creative Blog Designs from Smashing Magazine (thanks, Mark Luckie!),  I wish you good luck!
